Energy, Electromagnetic Fields and 5G

The electromagnetic fields—whatever their frequency bands—are increasingly being used in wireless communications that nowadays are used in almost every aspect of our daily life.

Over the past 30 years, wireless communication systems have been increasingly used; the versatile use of new mobile phones and the emergence of all-pervasive wireless communication systems, such as machine-to-machine communication, are strengthening this tendency.

Mobile telephony is now commonplace around the world. This wireless technology relies upon an extensive network of fixed antennas, or base stations, relaying information with radiofrequency (RF) signals. Over 1.4 million base stations exist worldwide and the number is increasing significantly with the introduction of new generation technology.

Other wireless networks that allow high-speed internet access and services, such as wireless local area networks (WLANs), are also increasingly common in homes, offices, and many public areas (airports, schools, residential and urban areas). As the number of base stations and local wireless networks increases, so does the RF exposure of the population.

Today, 5G networks are being commercially deployed; they are a step toward increasing throughputs and huge amounts of data transferred every second and everywhere on the planet. They also bring new challenges for the EMF exposure management. This special issue addresses some of these challenging problems.

In this video, Dr. Joseph Mercola talks about electromagnetic radiation and the dangers it poses to your overall health.

In addition to millions of new 5G base stations on Earth and 20,000 new satellites in space, 200 billion transmitting objects, according to estimates, will be part of the Internet of Things by 2020, and one trillion objects a few years later. Commercial 5G at lower frequencies and slower speeds was deployed in Qatar, Finland and Estonia in mid-2018. The rollout of 5G at extremely high (millimeter wave) frequencies is planned to begin at the end of 2018.

Despite widespread denial, the evidence that radio frequency (RF) radiation is harmful to life is already overwhelming. The accumulated clinical evidence of sick and injured human beings, experimental evidence of damage to DNA, cells and organ systems in a wide variety of plants and animals, and epidemiological evidence that the major diseases of modern civilization—cancer, heart disease and diabetes—are in large part caused by electromagnetic pollution, forms a literature base of well over 10,000 peer-reviewed studies.

Let’s go more in depth about this system and its effects on the world today:

What is an Electromagnetic field?
An electromagnetic field, sometimes referred to as an EM (electro magnetic) field, is generated when charged particles, such as electrons, are accelerated. All electrically charged particles are surrounded by electric fields. Charged particles in motion produce magnetic fields. When the velocity of a charged particle changes, an EM field is produced.

Electromagnetic fields were first discovered in the 19th century, when physicists noticed that electric arcs (sparks) could be reproduced at a distance, with no connecting wires in between. This led scientists to believe that it was possible to communicate over long distances without wires. The first radio transmitters made use of electric arcs. These "spark transmitters" and the associated receivers were as exciting to people in the early 20th century as the Internet is today. This was the beginning of what we now call wireless communication.

Electromagnetic fields are typically generated by alternating current (AC) in electrical conductors. The frequency of the AC can range from one cycle in thousands of years (at the low extreme) to trillions or quadrillions of cycles per second( at the high extreme). The standard unit of EM frequency is the hertz, abbreviated Hz.v Larger units are often used. A frequency of 1,000 Hz is one kilohertz (kHz); a frequency of 1,000 kHz is one megahertz (MHz); a frequency of 1,000 MHz is one gigahertz (GHz).

The realm of EM field energy is called the electromagnetic radiation spectrum. In theory, this extends from arbitrarily long wavelengths to arbitrarily short wavelengths, or, as engineers sometimes imprecisely quip, "from DC to light."

The frequency of radiofrequency electromagnetic radiation ranges from 30 kilohertz (30 kHz, or 30,000 Hz) to 300 gigahertz (300 GHz, or 300 billion Hz). Electromagnetic fields in the radiofrequency range are used for telecommunications applications, including cell phones, televisions, and radio transmissions. The human body absorbs energy from devices that emit radiofrequency electromagnetic radiation. The dose of the absorbed energy is estimated using a measure called the specific absorption rate (SAR), which is expressed in watts per kilogram of body weight.

How is EMF measured?
EMF is typically measured in two ways

  • Total Surface Power Density (W/m2) - this measurement indicates the energy transmitted by an electromagnetic emitter and is commonly utilised for measuring signal strength.

  • Or in its Component

  • Electric field (V/m) measures the electric field strength volts per meter

  • Magnetic flux density (µT) Measures magnetic field strength in micro tesla

  • When considering the safety of EMF from electrical systems typically magnetic flux density (µT) is measurement used as it is not readily shielded.

2G, 3G and 4G Networks

Since 1G was introduced in the early 1980s, a new wireless mobile telecommunications technology has been released roughly every 10 years. All of them refer to the technology used by the mobile carrier and device itself. They have different speeds and features that improve on the previous generation. The next generation is 5G, which is scheduled to launch in 2020.

Cell phones received their first major upgrade when technology went from 1G to 2G. This leap took place in Finland in 1991 and effectively took cell phones from analog to digital communications. The 2G telephone technology introduced call and text encryption, along with data services such as SMS, picture messages, and MMS.

The introduction of 3G networks in 1998 ushered in faster data-transmission speeds, so you could use your cell phone in more data-demanding ways such as for video calling and mobile internet access. The term "mobile broadband" was first applied to 3G cellular technology.

The fourth generation of networking, which was released in 2008, is 4G. It supports mobile web access like 3G does and also gaming services, HD mobile TV, video conferencing, 3D TV, and other features that demand high speeds. The max speed of a 4G network when the device is moving is 100 Mbps. The speed is 1 Gbps for low-mobility communication such as when the caller is stationary or walking.

Wireless technology has come along way since the days of radio powered "mobile" phones to todays powerful smart phones.

Effects of electromagnetic fields on human health
Some studies show a link between exposure to EMF and increased rate of Leukemia, cancer, brain tumors and other health problems. Also, there is some uncertainty remains as to the actual mechanisms responsible for these biological hazards and which type of fields magnetic or electric or both are of great concern.

A report called the BioInitiative report, published in 2012 compiled over 1800 completed studies that all show dramatic biological damage that results from even low-level EMF exposure.

Recent attention has focused on nonionizing, nonthermal electromagnetic fields as an environmental etiology of human disease. Research suggests that electromagnetic fields may influence the immune system, behavior, pregnancy, chronobiology, and Cancer.

Too many children are brought up having a mobile phone. How dangerous is that? Can electromagnetic fields be use for sinister mind-control purposes to influence the mind? How dark does it get, and why?

Dr. Elizabeth Plourde discusses the damage electromagnetic frequencies can cause in the body, even down to the cellular level. Find out what conditions may be caused by this kind of pollution. She also discusses how she was affected by EMFs!

Mobile Phones
Mobile phones are low-powered radiofrequency transmitters, operating at frequencies between 450 and 2700 MHz with peak powers in the range of 0.1 to 2 watts. The handset only transmits power when it is turned on. The power (and hence the radiofrequency exposure to a user) falls off rapidly with increasing distance from the handset. A person using a mobile phone 30–40 cm away from their body – for example when text messaging, accessing the Internet, or using a “hands free” device – will therefore have a much lower exposure to radiofrequency fields than someone holding the handset against their head.

Researchers have carried out several types of epidemiologic studies in humans to investigate the possibility of a relationship between cell phone use and the risk of malignant brain tumors, such as gliomas, as well as benign tumors, such as acoustic neuroma, meningiomas, and parotid gland tumors.

Also, studies have found links between time spent carrying a cell phone in your pocket and erectile dysfunction, morphological changes to sperm, and reductions in sperm counts.

Another study gathered 150 mobile phone-using men and separated them according to which pocket held their phones. Group 1 wore them on the right side, Group 2 on the left. They looked at bone quality at the right hip, using Group 2 as a non-exposure control.  On average, subjects wore their phones on the hip for 14.7 hours a day. Those with exposure showed signs of slightly degraded bone quality, albeit not as severe as osteoporotic patients.

In May 2015, Berkeley unanimously passed the Cell Phone Right to Know' Cell Phone Ordinance requiring that cell phone retailers inform consumers about the fine print advisories buried in their user manuals after over five years of advocacy and testimony to the Council. 5G
Telecommunications companies worldwide, with the support of governments, are poised within the next two years to roll out the fifth-generation wireless network (5G). This is set to deliver what is acknowledged to be unprecedented societal change on a global scale.

We will have “smart” homes, “smart” businesses, “smart” highways, “smart” cities and self-driving cars. Virtually everything we own and buy, from refrigerators and washing machines, will contain antennas and microchips and will be connected wirelessly to the Internet. Every person on Earth will have instant access to super-high-speed, low- latency wireless communications from any point on the planet, even in rainforests, mid-ocean and the Antarctic.

What is not widely acknowledged is that this will also result in unprecedented environmental change on a global scale. The planned density of radio frequency transmitters is impossible to envisage. The roll out of 5G at extremely high (millimeter wave) frequencies is planned to begin at the end of 2018.

If the telecommunications industry’s plans for 5G come to fruition, no person, no animal, no bird, no insect and no plant on Earth will be able to avoid exposure, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, to levels of RF radiation that are tens to hundreds of times greater than what exists today, without any possibility of escape anywhere on the planet. These 5G plans threaten to provoke serious, irreversible effects on humans and permanent damage to all of the Earth’s ecosystems.

Ground-based 5G
In order to transmit the enormous amounts of data required for the Internet of Things (IoT), 5G technology, when fully deployed, will use millimeter waves, which are poorly transmitted through solid material. This will require every carrier to install base stations every 100 meters in every urban area in the world. Unlike previous generations of wireless technology, in which a single antenna broadcasts over a wide area, 5G base stations and 5G devices will have multiple antennas arranged in “phased arrays”, that work together to emit focused, steerable, laser-like beams that track each other.

Each 5G phone will contain dozens of tiny antennas, all working together to track and aim a narrowly focused beam at the nearest cell tower. The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has adopted rules permitting the effective power of those beams to be as much as 20 watts, ten times more powerful than the levels permitted for current phones.

Each 5G base station will contain hundreds or thousands of antennas aiming multiple laser-like beams simultaneously at all cell phones and user devices in its service area. This technology is called “multiple input multiple output” or MIMO. FCC rules permit the effective radiated power of a 5G base station’s beams to be as much as 30,000 watts per 100 MHz of spectrum, or equivalently 300,000 watts per GHz of spectrum, tens to hundreds of times more powerful than the levels permitted for current base stations.

Disclosure about 5G — and its unprecedented risk for humanity — is occurring within the United Nations.

Space-based 5G
At least five companies are proposing to provide 5G from space from a combined 20,000 satellites in low- and medium-Earth orbit that will blanket the Earth with powerful, focused, steerable beams. Each satellite will emit millimetre waves with an effective radiated power of up to 5 million watts from thousands of antennas arranged in a phased array. Although the energy reaching the ground from satellites will be less than that from ground-based antennas, it will irradiate areas of the Earth not reached by other transmitters and will be additional to ground-based 5G transmissions from billions of IoT objects. Even more importantly, the satellites will be located in the Earth’s magnetosphere, which exerts a significant influence over the electrical properties of the atmosphere. The alteration of the Earth’s electromagnetic environment may be an even greater threat to life than the radiation from ground-based antennas.

Dr. Martin Pall from the Washington State University (WSU) concluded that the "5G rollout is absolutely insane". Dr. Pall briefly explains the mechanisms of how the electrosmog emitted by our cell phones, wifi routers, cell phone antennas and other wireless technologies affect human cells.

SpaceX

24 of May 2019, SpaceX successfully launched its first 60 Starlink satellites into orbit around the Earth. The FCC gave approval to SpaceX on March 29, 2018, to launch 4,425 satellites into low orbit around the Earth.

The sixty 200-kilo satellites were launched with a Falcon rocket from the Cape Canaveral space base. They are intended to make broadband internet more accessible worldwide. Ultimately, there must be a network of possibly 12,000 satellites, StarLink, a few hundred kilometers above the earth.

The Starlink satellites will orbit much lower — between 210 and 710 miles above the surface. That reduces the lagginess, or latency. SpaceX has said performance should be comparable to ground-based cable and optical fiber networks that carry most internet traffic today. Starlink would provide high-speed internet to parts of the world that currently are largely cut off from the modern digital world.

Because the satellites are lower, they travel faster. Thus, Starlink must provide a constellation of satellites whizzing around the planet. When one satellite moves away from one of its customers, another one must come into view in order to provide a continuous internet connection.

The total number of satellites that is expected to be put into low and high orbit by several companies will be 20,000 satellites.
5G will use Phased Array Antennas to shoot Beams of Radiation at Cell Phones.
These satellites will use the same type of phased array antennas as will be used by the ground-based 5G systems.

This means that they will send tightly focused beams of intense microwave radiation at each specific 5G device that is on the Earth and each device will send a beam of radiation back to the satellite. No one will be free from exposure

By next year, SpaceX hopes that hundreds of the devices could be circling the planet, beaming high-speed internet service everywhere.

An amateur astronomer in the Netherlands caught sight of them orbiting Earth after deployment, and captured the scene on video. Astronomer Dr. Marco Langbroek noted on his blog that he calculated where the satellites would be orbiting, and waited with his camera.

Health Effects
In 2015, 215 scientists from 41 countries communicated their alarm to the United Nations (UN) and World Health Organization (WHO). They stated that “numerous recent scientific publications have shown that EMF [electromagnetic fields] affects living organisms at levels well below most international and national guidelines”. More than 10,000 peer-reviewed scientific studies demonstrate harm to human health from RF radiation. Effects include:

Biodiversity Effects
Electromagnetic radiation from power lines, wi-fi, phone masts and broadcast transmitters poses a ‘credible’ threat to wildlife, a new report suggests, as environmentalists warned the 5G roll out could cause greater harm.

An analysis of 97 studies by the EU-funded review body EKLIPSE concluded that radiation is a potential risk to insect and bird orientation and plant health.

The EKLIPSE report found that the magnetic orientation of birds, mammals and invertebrates such as insects and spiders could be disrupted by electromagnetic radiation (EMR). It also found established that plant metabolism is also altered by EMR.

The authors of the review conclude that there is “an urgent need to strengthen the scientific basis of the knowledge on EMR and their potential impacts on wildlife.

Damage goes well beyond the human race, as there is abundant evidence of harm to diverse plant- and wildlife and laboratory animals, including:

AI Warfare
Technologies that could unleash a generation of lethal weapons systems requiring little or no human interaction are being funded by the Ministry of Defence, according to a new report.

The development of autonomous military systems – dubbed “killer robots” by campaigners opposed to them – is deeply contentious.

The government insists it “does not possess fully autonomous weapons and has no intention of developing them.'' But, since 2015, the UK has declined to support proposals put forward at the UN to ban them. Now, using government data, Freedom of Information requests and open-source information, a year-long investigation reveals that defence contractors are funding dozens of artificial intelligence programmes for use in conflict.

We have already seen the development of drones which have advanced autonomous capabilities, such as the Taranis stealth drone developed by BAE Systems, and the development of a truly autonomous lethal drone in the foreseeable future is now a real possibility.

Tesla’s Elon Musk and Alphabet’s Mustafa Suleyman are leading a group of 116 specialists from across 26 countries who are calling for the ban on autonomous weapons.

The founders wrote: “Once developed, lethal autonomous weapons will permit armed conflict to be fought at a scale greater than ever, and at timescales faster than humans can comprehend. These can be weapons of terror, weapons that despots and terrorists use against innocent populations, and weapons hacked to behave in undesirable ways.

Solutions

Ways to reduce EMF Pollution
Clearly, people are spending a lot of time around electromagnetic radiation. In the modern age, electronic devices like laptops, tablets and cell phones all emit Electromagnetic Radiation (EMF), and to avoid it would be impossible.

However, it is possible to mitigate the risks and decrease your exposure levels.

1.)  Replace your wireless devices with wired versions. This includes:

  • Cordless “DECT” phones

  • Wi-Fi router

  • Laptop computers – use an Ethernet cable rather than Wi-Fi

  • Wireless baby monitors. Learn more here.

  • Wireless “Smart” Meters

2.)  Use your smart phone safely:

  • Keep the phone on “Airplane” mode most of the time.

  • Never put a cell phone to your head.

  • Use speaker phone or this Air-Tube Headset for voice calls.

  • Do not carry a cell phone in your pocket or bra unless it is on “Airplane” mode.

  • Do not use the phone while in a car – radiation levels are increased.

  • If you must use a cell phone, do so primarily for text messages and emergencies. Save high data activities and voice calls for a wired internet connection at home.

3.)  Use your laptop computer wisely:

  • Use a wired Ethernet connection for internet (rather than Wi-Fi).

  • It is best to use a laptop that is on battery power (not charging/plugged-in).

  • Use a wired external keyboard and mouse to reduce the EMF exposure to your body.

  • Keep the computer a few feet from your body – never put a laptop on your lap / body.

  • Take frequent breaks and ground yourself in your garden / lawn as often as possible.

  • Utilize wireless iPads sparingly – never stream video or music using Wi-Fi.

4.)  Create a sleep sanctuary – One of the most beneficial steps you can take is to reduce EMF exposure while you sleep:

  • Unplug everything in your bedroom at night.

  • Keep cell phones, iPads and other electronics out of your bedroom. Use a simple battery-powered alarm clock.

  • Turn off the electrical circuit breaker to your bedroom at night. Just keep a flashlight by your nightstand.

  • Make sure any remaining wireless devices in your home are turned off at night.
